The Story
One Deadly Mile
Book Two – Coming Spring 2027
Frank Valenti got justice for Carlos Moreno in Aruba, but he never got his own name back in New York City. Could the same forces be behind Carlos’s death and Frank’s troubles in New York?
One year later, things in Aruba seem to be going well. The Commons works. Nico is out on the pier before anyone. The band still plays five nights a week. Can the calm remain? Evidently not.
In New York, trouble is brewing. A government appraiser named Howard Mercer goes off an icy Brooklyn pier. Three days before, he mailed a reporter proof that the City sold a mile of valuable waterfront to a favored bidder for far less than it was worth.
The reporter is Diana Rose.
The envelope sits in a mailroom bin at the Chronicle for eleven days. By the time Diana opens it, surveyors for the Aruban government are marking out Carlos’s beach. The trust van der Meer built is ironclad against every buyer alive. It was never built to stop the government.
Meanwhile, New York wants to pull Frank back. One page of the conspiracy ledger he built twenty years ago has surfaced. It’s enough to reopen his file, but nowhere near enough to clear him. And the evidence that could finish the job may burn the man Diana loves.
Frank will go looking for the man behind all of his troubles in New York, and he will find him inside an hour…because he’s not hiding.
Everyone knows Gerry Voss. It has never once made a difference.
Carlos kept one secret for twenty-five years and he wound up dead on a cold marble floor. In his private papers, Diana is about to find the other one.
